RESUMO - O feijão-caupi é um alimento muito importante para as populações das regiões Norte e Nordeste do Brasil, representando uma excelente fonte de proteínas e minerais. O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar o potencial de 100 genótipos de feijão-caupi para biofortificação de ferro, zinco e proteína, e qualidade de cozimento. Os teores de ferro e zinco foram analisados por espectrometria de fluorescência de raios X; o conteúdo de proteínas foi baseado na determinação de nitrogênio, pelo método de Kjeldahl; e a qualidade de cozimento foi avaliada com uso de panela de pressão elétrica e cozedor de Mattson. A superioridade dos genótipos para ferro, zinco, proteínas e qualidade de cozimento foi realizada utilizando-se o índice de qualidade nutricional e de cozimento. O teor de ferro variou de 3,58 a 6,06 mg 100g-1, com uma média geral de 4,66 mg 100g-1, enquanto o teor de zinco entre 2,35 e 4,57 mg 100g-1 e média de 3,31 mg 100g-1. O ter de proteínas apresentou amplitude de 20,82 a 26,92 g 100g-1 e média de 24,30 g 100g-1. A porcentagem de grãos cozidos variou de 20 a 98%, com média de 68,7%. Os grãos da linhagem MNC11-1023E-28 apresentam melhor perfil de qualidade nutricional e de cocção, apresentando potencial como um alimento para atender às demandas dos consumidores e reverter a deficiência de ferro, zinco e proteínas na população brasileira.

ABSTRACT - Cowpea is a very important food for the populations of the North and Northeast regions of Brazil, representing an excellent source of proteins and minerals. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the potential of 100 cowpea genotypes for biofortification of iron, zinc, and proteins, and cooking quality of the grain. The iron and zinc contents were analyzed by x-ray fluorescence spectrometry; protein content was based on nitrogen determination, using the Kjeldahl method; and cooking quality was assessed using an electric pressure cooker and Mattson cooker. The superiority of genotypes for iron, zinc, proteins, and cooking quality was carried out using the nutritional quality and cooking index. The iron content ranged from 3.58 to 6.06 mg 100g-1, with an overall average of 4.66 mg 100g-1, while the zinc content between 2.35 and 4.57 mg 100g-1 and average of 3.31 mg 100g-1. Protein range ranged from 20.82 to 26.92 g 100g-1 and an average of 24.30 g 100g-1. The percentage of cooked grains ranged from 20 to 98%, with an average of 68.7%. The line MNC11-1023E-28 has the best profile of nutritional and cooking quality, showing potential as a food to meet consumer demands and reverse iron and zinc deficiency in the Brazilian population.

Resumo O objetivo deste trabalho foi selecionar linhagens de feijão-caupi de inflorescência composta que apresentam alto potencial para gerar a primeira cultivar comercial com esta característica no Brasil. Trinta e sete linhagens foram avaliadas em delineamento de blocos ao acaso, com duas repetições, em 2021, no município de Teresina, no estado do Piauí. Foram avaliados os seguintes caracteres: número de dias para o início do florescimento, porte da planta, qualidade comercial do grão, número de grãos por vagem, peso de 100 grãos e rendimento de grãos. Foram realizadas análises de deviance pela metodologia da máxima verossimilhança restrita/melhor preditor linear não viesado, e estimados os valores e os parâmetros genéticos necessários para realização da seleção simultânea com base no índice de soma de postos. Foi detectada diferença estatística entre as linhagens avaliadas por meio do teste de razão de verossimilhança. Em geral, a variância genética foi o maior componente da variância fenotípica para os caracteres avaliados. As dez linhagens de feijão-caupi de inflorescência composta mais promissoras são: MNC15-33E-123, MNC15-33E-178, MNC15-33E-222, MNC15-33E-171, MNC15-33E-232, MNC15-33E-223, MNC15-33E-219, MNC15-33E-183, MNC15-33E-91 e MNC15-33E-165. Essas linhagens foram selecionadas para as próximas etapas de seleção e apresentam grande potencial para gerar a primeira cultivar comercial de feijão-caupi de inflorescência composta no Brasil.

Abstract The objective of this work was to select cowpea lines with compound inflorescences that show a high potential to generate the first commercial cultivar with this characteristic in Brazil. Thirty-seven lines were evaluated in a randomized complete block design, with two replicates, in 2021, in the municipality of Teresina, in the state of Piauí. The following traits were evaluated: number of days to the onset of flowering, plant size, commercial grain quality, number of grains per pod, weight of 100 grains, and grain yield. Deviance analyzes were performed by the restricted maximum likelihood/ best unbiased linear predictor methodology, and the values and genetic parameters necessary to carry out simultaneous selection were estimated based on the rank sum index. A statistical difference was detected between the lines evaluated by the likelihood ratio test (LRT). In general, genetic variance was the largest component of phenotypic variance for the evaluated traits. The ten most promising cowpea lines with compound inflorescences are: MNC15-33E-123, MNC15-33E-178, MNC15-33E-222, MNC15-33E-171, MNC15-33E-232, MNC15-33E-223, MNC15-33E-219, MNC15-33E-183, MNC15-33E-91, and MNC15-33E-165. These lines were selected for the next selection stages and show a high potential to generate the first commercial cowpea cultivar with compound inflorescences in Brazil.

RESUMO O feijão-caupi é uma leguminosa de grande importância socioeconômica no mundo. A cultura constitui uma excelente fonte de proteínas e minerais, principalmente para a população mais pobre. No Brasil, é cultivada em alguns estados. O semiárido piauiense é a zona de maior produção do Estado. Assim, a seleção de genótipos superiores de feijão-caupi para múltiplos caracteres e adaptados a esta área de cultivo é importante para os pequenos e médios agricultores do Piauí. O objetivo deste estudo foi selecionar linhagens superiores de feijão-caupi para múltiplos caracteres e adaptados à zona semiárida do Piauí, com base na abordagem Genotype by Yield*Trait (GYT) Biplot. Dezessete linhagens elite e três cultivares foram avaliadas em delineamento de blocos casualizados com quatro repetições, em regime de sequeiro em três ambientes do semiárido piauiense. Os seguintes caracteres foram avaliados: número de dias para início do florescimento, comprimento da vagem, número de grãos por vagem, peso de cem grãos, índice de grãos, produtividade de grãos, teores de Fe e Zn, e qualidade de cozimento. Análise de variância, agrupamento de médias e seleção simultânea por GYT Biplot foram implementados. Por meio da abordagem GYT Biplot, as linhagens MNC11-1013E-35 e MNC11-1013E-15 foram superiores porque combinaram a produtividade de grãos simultaneamente com os componentes de produção e nutricionais no cultivo do semiárido piauiense, porém, MNC11-1052E-3 foi melhor na combinação de produtividade e qualidade de cozimento do que as outras linhagens.

ABSTRACT Cowpea is a great socioeconomically important leguminous plant worldwide. The crop is an excellent source of proteins and minerals, mainly for the poorest populations. It is cultivated in some states of Brazil. The Piauí semi-arid is the most yielding zone in the state. Thus, the selection of superior cowpea genotypes for multi-traits and adaptabilities to this growing area is very important for the small-scale and medium-scale farmers in Piauí. The objective of this study was to select the superior cowpea lines for their multi-traits and adaptabilities to the Piauí semi-arid zone based on the genotype by the yield*trait (GYT) Biplot approach. Seventeen elite lines and three cultivars were evaluated in a randomized complete block design with four replications under the rainfed growing condition at three different locations away from the Piauí semi-arid zone. The following traits were evaluated: the number of days to flowering, pod length, the number of grains per pod, weight of one hundred grains, grain index, grain yield, Fe and Zn contents, and also the cooking quality. The analysis of variance (ANOVA), the grouping of means, and simultaneous selection by the GYT Biplot were implemented. Through the GYT Biplot approach, the two lines, MNC11-1013E-35 and MNC11-1013E-15, were found superior because they combined the traits, grain-yield with the yield components and nutritional traits simultaneously during the cultivation in the Piauí semi-arid zone. However, the MNC11-1052E-3 line was better in the combination of yield and cooking quality than the other lines.

Abstract The aim of this study was to investigate genetic control of the traits number of days to flowering (NDF) and number of days to maturity (NDM) in a cowpea cross. Genetic parameters were estimated in segregating and non-segregating generations of a cross between two contrasting cowpea genotypes (MNC05-828C-1-9-1 × MNC04-792F-146). No evidence for maternal effect was found for either trait. Broad and narrow sense heritability estimates were above 50%, allowing genetic gains from selection of plants in the F2 generation. High significance of additive gene effects and low contribution of dominance and epistatic effects were detected for both traits. The estimated number of genes controlling the traits was around 4 for NDF and 5 for NDM. The results suggest that early-maturing cowpea self-fertilized cultivars can be developed through standard breeding approaches, meeting the demands of modern agricultural systems for more crop seasons per year and mechanized harvesting.
